A self-evaluation is your one chance to control the narrative before calibration. The comments below are organized by role so you can find the closest match to your work, then adapt the shape — action verb + outcome + number — to your own evidence. Every example is written the way a strong self-appraisal actually reads: past tense, specific, and quantified.
If you want to turn your own notes into comments in this shape without writing them from scratch, drop them into the [self-review generator](/tools/self-review) — it produces review-ready drafts grouped by rating.
The formula every example below follows
Strong self-evaluation comments and self-appraisal comments by employee example share the same structure:
Action verb → what you did → outcome → number or named result.
- ❌ Weak: "Helped with the checkout project."
- ✅ Strong: "Led the checkout latency rewrite; P95 dropped 1.8s → 420ms and abandoned-cart revenue recovered ~$1.1M/quarter."
Every section below applies that formula to a specific role.
Self evaluation examples for Software Engineers

- Sourced the top 5 feature requests to Product each month; two shipped this half based on that intake.
Self-appraisal comments by rating outcome
The same evidence reads differently depending on the rating you're arguing for. Match the frame to the outcome.
"Exceeds expectations"
- Delivered every committed goal and took on the unowned reliability problem, cutting P1s 55%.
- Grew from IC to informal tech lead this year — set direction for two projects the team is still executing on.
"Meets expectations"
- Delivered all committed work on time; no red projects, no missed reviews, no dropped incidents on my rotation.
- Grew steadily across all three focus areas from mid-year: scope, communication, and technical depth.
"Developing"
- Delivered the core of my commitments; missed one deadline in Q2, recovered it in Q3 with a clean shipped launch.
- Actively working on communication with cross-functional partners; already visible in the last two project retros.
Self-appraisal comments about a weakness (without sabotaging your rating)
Every strong self-evaluation names one real growth area. The format:
Growth area → concrete example → what you're already doing about it.
- "I under-communicated on the Q2 migration and only surfaced risk two weeks in. I've moved to weekly written updates on every project I own."
- "I default to solving problems myself instead of delegating. This half, I handed off two workstreams — both shipped without me on the critical path."
- "My written docs lag my verbal reasoning. I'm writing a one-page brief before every major decision this quarter; the last three landed cleanly in review."
What NOT to write in a self-evaluation
- Vague verbs. "Helped with," "was part of," "contributed to." Replace with led, owned, drove, shipped.
- Effort without outcome. Managers can't rate effort; they rate results.
- Duties instead of accomplishments. Your job description is not this year's evidence.
- Unqualified superlatives. "Best quarter ever." Replace with the number.
- Blame for missed goals. Own the miss, name what you learned, show the recovery.
Turn your own notes into comments in this shape
If you already log wins as they happen, the [self-review generator](/tools/self-review) turns them into comments that follow the same action-verb + outcome + number formula every example above uses. If you don't have a log yet, [start one now](/onboarding) — every self-evaluation from here becomes an hour of editing instead of a weekend of remembering.

A self-evaluation is only as strong as the evidence behind it. Log the wins during the week they happen; every review after that gets easier.
