Brag Sheet Template: Examples, Format, and How to Write One
A brag sheet is a one-page record of your wins, metrics, and recognition that you bring to promotion discussions, performance reviews, and self-evaluations. This guide walks through the format managers expect, shows a worked example, and gives you a free template you can download today.
What is a brag sheet?
A brag sheet (sometimes called a brag document or wins log) is a short, structured summary of the work you've shipped in a given period — typically a quarter, half, or full performance cycle. It exists so that your manager, your skip-level, and the promotion committee can see your impact at a glance, without having to reconstruct it from memory or scattered Slack threads.
The best brag sheets share three traits: they are specific (named projects, real numbers), outcome-oriented (impact, not activity), and scannable (one page, bullets, bolded headlines).
The brag sheet format managers expect
Across tech, finance, consulting, and academia, most effective brag sheets follow the same seven-section structure. Use it as a checklist — you don't need every section every cycle.
- Headline wins — your top 3–5 contributions, each in one line with a measurable outcome.
- Projects & deliverables — the body of work, with your role and the result.
- Metrics & outcomes — revenue, cost, latency, adoption, NPS, anything numeric you moved.
- Cross-functional collaboration — who you partnered with and what you unblocked.
- Leadership & mentorship — people coached, hires made, processes improved.
- Growth areas & what's next — skills built and your stretch goals.
- Recognition & feedback — kudos and peer reviews, pasted verbatim.
Brag sheet example
Here's a short worked example for a senior engineer heading into a promotion cycle. Notice how each line names the action, the impact, and a number.
Headline wins — H2 2025 • Led the checkout latency rewrite — cut P95 from 1.8s → 420ms, recovered an estimated $1.1M in abandoned-cart revenue. • Shipped the new fraud-rules engine with Risk — false-positive rate dropped 38% in the first 30 days post-launch. • Onboarded and mentored two new hires; both ramped to first on-call rotation in under 6 weeks (team avg: 10). Metrics moved • Checkout conversion: +2.3 pts QoQ • On-call pages: -41% after alert hygiene project • Code review turnaround: median 9h → 3h Recognition • "Cleanest migration plan I've reviewed this year." — Staff Eng • Spot bonus from VP Eng, Oct 2025
How to use it for a promotion cycle
- Update it weekly, not at review time. Memory fades — log wins the week they happen so the cycle write-up is a copy-paste, not an archaeology project.
- Lead with outcomes, then explain how. Managers skim. Put the metric in the first half of every bullet.
- Map each win to your level rubric. If you're going for Senior, show scope. For Staff, show influence across teams.
- Share it before the 1:1. Send the sheet to your manager the day before your promo conversation so they can prep, not react.
